India, Eastern Ghats, Andhra Pradesh (Kadapa, Anantapur, Vizianagaram, East & West Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh): old agricultural lands with an arid climate, with a high degree of erosion. Due to climate change, a shortage in rainfall is causing reduced vegetation on ground cover leaving soils more vulnerable to erosion/degradation. Extensive and injudicious use of chemical fertilizers in the region is causing an adverse effect on soil biota and physical and chemical characteristics of agricultural lands. It is evident that the region’s soil ecosystems are degraded, rapidly affecting the rural population who directly and indirectly depend on soil-based livelihoods. The degradation of non-agricultural lands is essentially caused by regional climate factors and a lack of community ownership.
