A movement to restore the Iberian Peninsula

Across Iberia, local people and organisations are restoring the landscapes they call home. Commonland has worked here since 2013, supporting holistic landscape restoration in the Altiplano Estepario alonside AlVelAl Association.

That decade of work has now grown into something bigger: La Red de Territorios Regenerativos, the first cross-border alliance dedicated to spreading and scaling the regenerative movement across Iberia.

Together with our partners, we aim to make Iberia a global lighthouse for restoration.

Why restoration matters in the Iberian Peninsula

The Iberian Peninsula is one of Europe’s most climate-vulnerable regions. Desertification, industrial agriculture, water stress, and rural depopulation are degrading landscapes and hollowing out communities.

Desertification

74% of Spain and 58% of Portugal is threatened, with soil degradation tripling in the last decade

Extreme weather

Catastrophic wildfires, prolonged droughts, and flash floods are intensifying across the region

Water crisis

Reservoirs running dry, groundwater depleted by intensive agriculture

Rural depopulation

Communities emptying out, threatening centuries of rural culture and knowledge

Industrial agriculture

Monocultures and chemical dependency stripping soils and biodiversity

Our approach in the Iberian Peninsula

We work directly with local landscape coalitions working across their landscape to restore and regenerative. One example is our anchor landscape in Iberia – the Altiplano Estepario – where we’ve worked with local people for over a decade on holistic landscape restoration.

We co-founded the Network of Regenerative Territories (La Red de Territorios Regenerativos) in 2021 with nine local landscape coalitions and 6 strategic partners to scale restoration work across Iberia. “La Red”, as it is known by its members, is a living network of eight landscape initiatives and six strategic partners, facilitating cross-border knowledge exchange, capacity building, landscape finance, policy advocacy, and co-creative strategies rooted in local culture and ecology. Find out more about La Red below.

The Network of Regenerative Territories — scaling restoration across Iberia

La Red de Territorios Regenerativos (The Network of Regenerative Territories is the first cross-border alliance dedicated to spreading and scaling landscape restoration across Spain and Portugal. Connecting nine landscape organisations and six strategic partners working across 2.5 million+ hectares, the network enables knowledge exchange, policy influence, and shared financing – with the goal to grow to 16 regenerative territories by 2030.
