What we do in Europe

Across Europe, landscapes are under pressure: from desertification in the south to peatland degradation in the north, from rural depopulation to industrial agriculture’s toll on soils, water, and biodiversity. But in every corner, locally rooted movements are already proving that restoration works.

Commonland supports holistic landscape restoration across three European clusters, working with farmers, communities, river trusts, and bioregional initiatives to restore nature, strengthen rural economies, and reconnect people to place.

Weaving Europe's Future

Stitching together resilient landscapes and communities

Sarah and Ray sit down for a cup of tea at Ray’s river-bank cottage overlooking the estuary, where three large rivers meet the tides in a constant ebb and flow metres below. They’re celebrating winning funding for the ‘Seasons of Change’ festival, part of Ray’s vision to empower the third age — people over 60 — to become local changemakers. A sparkle in his eye, the 87-year old is at it again: this time with yet more new ways to make the land and seas around his home landscape around Waterford, South-East Ireland, a place where communities, nature, and businesses can thrive together.
